Recent questionnaire from the Marietta Daily Journal which outlines my stance on important local and national issues:
Do you favor extending MARTA rail lines into Cobb? I would be in favor of letting the voters decide whether to extend MARTA to Cobb.
Are you in favor of light-rail lines for Cobb? If so, where? I would be in favor of light rail lines in Cobb. One from Town Center to Cumberland Mall and a line from Cumberland Mall to the Six Flags area where there are CCT connections with MARTA buses.

The 2010 session of the Georgia General Assembly finally came to an end on April 29. Since it took 109 days to complete the required 40 working days, the session will go down in history as maybe the longest ever and for sure the longest since the 1880’s. The ceremonial ending of the session, “sine die” ( which is Latin meaning “without assigning a day for a further meeting”), was long overdue. As is the tradition, the chamber doors of the House and Senate were opened wide to allow the Lt. Governor, the presiding office of the Senate, and the Speaker of the House to be able to see each other holding a white handkerchief aloft on opposite sides of the magnificent Capitol building. As the clock reached midnight, each leader then dropped the “white flag” to simultaneously adjourn both bodies for the year.

Economy, In the Community
This time of the year, I am usually writing a Legislative wrap-up article to highlight the House and Senate accomplishments of another year under the Gold Dome. Instead, I am trying to understand why the Legislature is still in session and when the final gavel will fall, “sine die” for 2010. As of early April, the 180 house members and 56 senators have completed 33 of the required 40 day session. The remaining seven working days could possibly take several more weeks. Yes, it could take weeks to complete only seven days and most of the important work of this year will probably be done in the final two or three days.

February 18th marked the 20th day of the 40 day 2010 legislative session. With 20 days to go before the last gavel, sine die, Georgia’s elected policy makers must struggle with how to provide services to Georgians most affected by the “Great Recession” and also make the investments necessary for Georgia to prosper in the future. Of course there is other news coming from the Gold Dome this session, but the budget deficits are at the forefront of all deliberations. I keep talking about the budget and I remember speaking to a group a few years ago as I attempted to explain Georgia’s budget process. Although not a very interesting subject, the Budget is, by far, the most important piece of legislation passed each year.

The second Monday in January is a very important date for every person in Georgia. All 180 members of the Georgia House of Representatives and the 56 members of the Senate begin the 40 working days of the Legislative Session. In years passed, rural Georgia would send it brightest and best from all parts of Georgia to Atlanta to craft laws and pass a budget before returning home to begin the planting season in the spring. Today, the majority of the two legislative bodies come from the metropolitan areas of Georgia.

The Georgia General Assembly convenes each year on the second Monday in January. The 180 members of the House of Representatives and the 56 members of the Senate will begin the first of 40 working days on January 11, 2010 at 10:00 am. In the House, the first order of business, after roll call and scripture reading and prayers by the Chaplain of the Day, will be to elect a new Speaker and Speaker Pro Tempore (assistant speaker) of the House. After much publicized personal issues, the former Speaker of the House, Glenn Richardson, resigned at the end of 2009.

Volunteers
I recently had the unique honor of speaking to the Powder Springs Volunteer Award Banquet. Some the volunteers we recognized that night were the many who were rebuilding homes and lives from the recent flooding. Others rescued valuable artifacts from the Powder Springs Museum and still others were involved all year in upgrading landscaping around the city or members of the various City boards and groups and committees. As we recognized the many act of selflessness, I realized that those volunteers were simply trying to make a difference in their community. As we enter the holiday season, this is a great time to volunteer your time and efforts to help make a difference in your community or in the life of someone else. Get involved.
